The connections between the elements of transport networks require communication solutions, which are redundant, robust and fault tolerant both in the case of wired and mobile telecommunication systems.
The present and future transport vehicles use a growing number of onboard electronic devices influencing transport safety both in a direct and indirect way. All of these devices generate electromagnetic noises for the other devices, and of course, for themselves as well.
The number of devices and their resource capacity requirements are continuously growing (because of their growing need for high speed data communication and computation) but the amount of available resources may be limited (for example, the available frequencies for communication, IP addresses to distinguish devices, available computing capacities for the online and real-time services, etc.)
Among the main goals of the project is the mapping and studying the existing and potential capacity limitation and requirements and optimization of the use of the required resources:
- Frequency management including even legislation questions for mobile and fixed radiofrequency units used by transport systems
- The problem of coexistence and the necessary cooperation of the traditional IPv4 and the new IPv6 protocol (which is being introduced together with its development), which may raise numerous, still not investigated security problems
- QoS and QoE requirements for the fast and safe coordination, information and control and other services for the participants of traffic, and for the fast management of the occurring extreme situations
A key question from the point of view of transport security is the theoretical and practical examination of Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) of these devices, taking part in the standardization process with special respect to the topic of radiofrequency (RF) immunity.
The Radiofrequency Research and Testing Laboratory of Széchenyi István University of Győr is suitable for the testing of safety and electromagnetic compatibility of electronic devices and network elements used in vehicles and by transport systems, it is appropriate to evaluate and qualify the products of suppliers, capable of providing support for research and development in the field and able to take part in international cooperation.
The three main research topics of the project are:
- Question of applications, security, safety of radiofrequency devices used in transport systems
- High speed network architecture and applications, with respect to the requirements of the high-speed internet (FGI, Future Generation Internet)
- Compatibility, stability and security question of IPv6 introduction
